Honda was the first automaker to put a hybrid on the road with the original Insight in December 1999 and it wants to reclaim its place at the big kid's table with the resurrection of the name on an all-new hybrid.
 
The automaker formally unveiled the five-door hatch at the 2008 Paris auto show. The same car will first appear in the U.S. at this fall's Los Angeles Auto Show, with the production model to debut at the North American International Auto Show in January.
 
The Insight rides on an all-new platform as a bespoke hybrid, as opposed to offering a hybrid version of an existing vehicle as is the case with the current Honda Civic hybrid and the Honda Fit hybrid planned by 2015.
 
The Insight will be smaller than a Civic and CEO Takeo Fukui says it will be priced significantly below current hybrids. We expect it to start at about $19,000, which will make it the least expensive hybrid on the market. "This new Insight will break new ground as an affordable hybrid within the reach of customers who want great fuel economy and great value," Fukui says in a statement.
 
The on-sale date for the Insight is April 22--Earth Day--and the automaker is projecting global annual sales of 200,000, half of which are for the North American market. But Honda is known for erring on the conservative side, and given that it will go head-to-head with the Toyota Prius, which has sold almost 120,000 in the first eight months of this year in the U.S. alone, we would not be surprised to see Honda exceed these modest forecasts.
 
In looks, the new hatch bears a familial resemblance to Honda's other poster car for alternative fuels--the FCX Clarity fuel-cell vehicle, but the Insight also shares an aerodynamically raked front, stubby tail, and an overall profile with the Prius. Both offer five-passenger seating and plenty of cargo space inside a relatively small body. The Insight's folding rear seats further accentuate the cargo hold.
 
In terms of propulsion, the Insight gets a smaller, lighter--and less-expensive--version of Honda's Integrated Motor Assist hybrid system that is in the Civic. The smaller pack of nickel-metal-hydride batteries is stored under the trunk floor. Honda says lithium-ion batteries aren't yet a viable option.
 
Official fuel-economy ratings haven't yet been released, but Honda officials have suggested that the fuel economy would be about the same as that of the current Civic hybrid, which is 40 mpg in the city and 45 on the highway
 
The Insight will be built on a new assembly line at Honda's Suzuka, Japan, plant, which currently builds the Civic hybrid. It is the first of a hybrid onslaught that also calls for production of the CR-Z hybrid sports car concept shown at the 2007 Tokyo auto show, a new Honda Civic hybrid, and the addition of the Fit hybrid--all by 2015, at which point the automaker's goal is to be selling half a million hybrids per year globally.

TOKYO, October 21, 2009 - Honda today debuted the much-anticipated CR-Z Concept 2009, the second concept version of the stylish, sporty hybrid coupe, at the 41st Tokyo Motor Show. While the vehicle displayed at the show is a global concept with a rear seat, the production version that will be introduced to Canada and the U.S. in the second half of 2010 will be packaged as a sporty, 2-seat hybrid that provides a personal driving experience for North American customers.
"The new Honda CR-Z will expand our lineup of hybrid vehicles and reinforce the fun-to-drive values associated with the Honda brand," said Jerry Chenkin, executive vice president of Honda Canada Inc. "Beyond dynamic styling and features, the CR-Z will bring new levels of engagement and fun to Canadians who are interested in a small car or a hybrid vehicle."
CR-Z will join the Insight and Civic Hybrid in the Honda hybrid lineup, each offering distinct benefits. Civic Hybrid, launched in 2003, was Honda's first mainstream model to feature hybrid power. The 2010 Insight, introduced in March 2009, ushered in a new era of affordability for a hybrid family sedan. The CR-Z is designed to break new ground as a sporty, hybrid coupe with unique value.
The production version of the Honda CR-Z will make its world debut at the 2010 North American International Auto Show in Detroit this coming January.

Honda Canada Inc. has been named one of Canada's "Fifty Most Socially Responsible Corporations" in the Jantzi-Maclean's 2009 Corporate Responsibility Report. The report appeared in a recent issue of Maclean's magazine.
Jantzi Research Associates - an independent investment research firm -evaluates and monitors the social, environmental and governance performance of approximately 300 Canadian companies and income trusts. Jantzi uses a best-of-sector methodology to assess all constituents of the S&P/TSX Composite Index rather than excluding industries, and measures each firm against the standard of best practices in its industry.
According to Jantzi, the Fifty Most Socially Responsible Corporations are "selected on the basis of a broad range of social, environmental and governance indicators... [and] these companies are making Canada a better place."
The Maclean's brief highlights Honda's 2010 Insight hybrid passenger car as being "the most affordable hybrid currently available in North America," and gives prominence to Honda's FCX Clarity hydrogen fuel cell vehicle which was awarded the "2009 World Green Car" award.
Other initiatives featured in the brief include Honda's new "Eco-Assist" system in the Honda Insight, which is designed to help drivers optimize fuel efficiency; and Japan-based Honda Soltec Co. Ltd, a Honda subsidiary which is developing its own line of ultra-thin, non-silicone solar cells for home and vehicle use.

Acura will be adding a TSX sport wagon to its 2011 vehicle lineup, scheduled to arrive at Acura dealerships in the Fall of 2010. The all-new 2010 Acura ZDX four-door "sports coupe" will arrive at
Acura dealerships in Canada this winter with dramatic styling, outstanding performance and the
latest in advanced technology. The ZDX features coupe-like styling with the added benefit of a
commanding presence and flexible utility.
Staying true to the prototype model that made its debut at the 2009 New York Auto Show in
April, the production ZDX will feature the key design highlights of a panoramic glass roof, hidden
rear door handles and bold fender flares. The ZDX will be produced at the Honda of Canada Mfg.
assembly plant in Alliston, Ontario.
Along with dynamic styling, the ZDX will boast outstanding performance from a 3.7-litre V-6
engine combined with an all-new 6-speed automatic transmission. The 3.7-litre SOHC V-6 allaluminum
engine will generate 300 horsepower and 270 lb.-ft. of torque for quick acceleration
response, outstanding low- and mid-range torque, and superior high-rpm power.
The new 6-speed automatic transmission with steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters gives the
ZDX excellent acceleration while also enhancing fuel economy. Standard on the ZDX is Acura's
exclusive Super Handling All-Wheel Drive(tm) (SH-AWD®) system. The SH-AWD® system expands
the ZDX's appeal by providing outstanding handling as well as excellent all-season capability.
Standard on the ZDX are 19-inch, 7-spoke alloy wheels; the largest standard wheel in the Acura
lineup.
Inside, the ZDX exhibits the highest levels of refinement and sophistication. Every ZDX interior
will feature a hand-stitched leather dash, panels and sculpted centre console. The rich leather
appointments give the ZDX a warm and inviting feeling while creating an intimate cockpit for
both driver and front seat passenger.
The flexible utility of ZDX allows great utility, coupled with sleek styling. The ZDX can seat up to
five adults while maintaining a generous amount of cargo space behind the second row of seats.
The cargo area can also be expanded to accommodate longer objects, such as golf bags, by
removing side panels in the cargo-compartment sidewalls. As an added bonus, there is an
integrated under-floor storage area.
The Canadian-built Acura ZDX will be available in two distinct trim levels: ZDX & ZDX with
Technology Package. Like all Acura models, the ZDX will come generously equipped from the
start. The panoramic glass roof with moveable sunshades, hand-stitched leather interior,
HandsFreeLink(tm) Bluetooth® connectivity, power tailgate, and a high powered audio system with
CD player, AM/FM/XM radio, and USB audio interface with iPod® integration are all standard
features.
The ZDX with Technology Package adds several features, including a Navigation System with
Bilingual Voice Recognition(tm), an Acura/ELS Surround® premium audio system and a new multiview
rear camera.
When the ZDX goes on sale this winter, it will bring a new level of prestige to the Acura lineup.

The 2010 Acura RDX goes on sale across Canada on August 10 with a fresh new exterior look, a more luxurious interior, new technology features and improved fuel economy. With a sales increase in Canada of 17 per cent for the first half of 2009, the turbocharged RDX continues to be a leading compact-luxury CUV of choice for Canadians with active lifestyles who want a responsive and sporty vehicle with utility, leading-edge styling and the benefits of Super-Handling All-Wheel Drive(tm) (SH-AWD(tm)).
Externally, the 2010 RDX receives numerous changes resulting in a more aggressive, sporty appearance. RDX exterior styling further emphasizes the crossover's sporty athleticism. Large wheel arches, aggressively raked body sides, steeply raked windscreen and a short rear overhang generate a taut and muscular presence.
RDX gets a new front fascia, Acura's signature front grille, a hood with a new front edge design and updated HID headlights that are now controlled by a standard automatic on/off function. The headlight's new design incorporates a "smoke style" chrome plating treatment and complements the angular pattern set by the Acura grille. At the rear, a more aggressive bumper fascia, rectangular exhaust finishers, revised taillights and satin finish trim give the 2010 RDX a freshened appearance.
New 18-inch diameter, 10-spoke aluminum-alloy wheels, in conjunction with the vehicle's wide track (1572-mm front / 1590-mm rear), are designed to provide improved handling. Changes to the brake booster and servo deliver better brake pedal feel plus less initial brake "grabbiness." The brake system also makes use of revised rear brake pad actuation that delivers less drag and longer pad life. Also new are Geomet-coated brake rotors for improved looks and added corrosion protection.
The RDX also receives several new standard interior features, including a rear view camera system, electronic compass, a pull handle to make closing the rear hatch easier, auto-function headlights, ambient footwell lighting, a centre console storage tray, improved cupholders, USB-port connectivity, and Note function for XM® Radio.
The 2010 RDX incorporates a class-leading array of features that keep passengers informed and entertained. RDX features as standard Bluetooth® HandsFreeLink® connectivity with new Bluetooth® audio capabilities, a 7-speaker Acura Premium Sound System and a new USB port that allows the connection of (and charging of) items such as an iPhone® or iPod®.
Also new for 2010 is a centre console tray that is a convenient way to store items such as a wallet, spare keys, or an iPod®. In addition, integrated to the underside of the lid is a coin holder and place for holding credit or gate cards. New for 2010 is a USB port (also located in the centre console) that allows for the easy connection of items such as an iPod®, iPhone® or a memory stick storage device.
The heart of the RDX's performance is its Variable Flow Turbocharger (VFT) that delivers a broad powerband with virtually no lag in throttle response. For 2010, the turbo system makes use of a new inlet pipe that is thicker to reduce noise during high boost situations, and the RDX incorporates a dual-stage radiator fan to further reduce cabin noise.
Rated output for the 2.3L turbocharged L4 engine is 240 horsepower at 6000 rpm with 260 lb.-ft. of torque at 4500 rpm. The RDX's 2010 Transport Canada fuel economy ratings are improved 8% from 2009 due to higher-ratio 4th and 5th gears, better aerodynamics, improved lock-up clutch and other enhancements. The 2010 Transport Canada ratings are 11.7 L/100km (City) and 8.7 L/100km (Highway). The RDX's 2010 "combined" rating of 10.3 L/100 km is improved from last year's combined rating of 11.1 L/100km. RDX meets Tier 2 - BIN 5 exhaust emissions standards.
For 2010, the RDX with Technology Package adds even more capability, and integrates seamlessly into the RDX's performance-oriented driving environment. The Acura Navigation System with Bilingual Voice Recognition(tm) has a revised 8-inch screen, improved navigation system feature use and content, and a faster reacting and more useful rear view camera. The non-Technology Package RDX now gets a standard rear view camera system with a viewing screen that is integrated into the auto-dimming rearview mirror.
For 2010, the Acura/ELS Surround® audio system receives a Note function for XM® Radio that allows the driver to later recall the song title, artist, a short excerpt of the actual song along with the XM® channel that played the song.

The Honda FC Sport design study model, a hydrogen-powered, three-seat sports car concept, will make its Canadian debut on February 11 to members of the press at the press preview of the 2009 Canadian International Auto Show in Toronto which opens to the public on Friday, February 13.

The FC Sport emphasizes the design flexibility and potential of Honda's V Flow fuel cell technology - already deployed in the Honda FCX Clarity sedan - and reconfigures it into a lightweight sports car design with an ultra-low center of gravity, powerful electric motor performance and zero-emissions. The design study concept is inspired by supercar levels of performance through low weight and a high-performance, electrically driven fuel cell powertrain.

"The Honda FC Sport explores new ways to satisfy automotive performance enthusiasts in a world beyond petroleum," said Jerry Chenkin, executive vice president of Honda Canada Inc. "People who enjoy sports cars will not be forgotten by Honda in a hydrogen-powered future."

The high-output Honda fuel cell powertrain and a sleek, aerodynamic body contribute to the vehicle's performance potential. A modular approach to fuel cell component packaging and the electric drivetrain contribute to the FC Sport's low center of gravity with the majority of vehicle mass distributed between the axles, creating the balanced weight distribution sought after in sports cars.

The ideal placement of the Honda V-Flow fuel cell stack and related components demonstrates the benefits of a platform-specific, hydrogen-powered fuel cell powertrain. The FC Sport is configured to accommodate a custom-formed high-power fuel cell stack, located between the rear seats, and a battery pack placed low in the middle of the vehicle. The electric motor resides just forward of the rear axle. Two fuel storage tanks, visible from above, are located above the rear axle.

The optimal placement of fuel cell components for performance also allows for a relatively large passenger cabin by conventional supercar standards with enough space for three seating positions. The interior layout focuses primarily on the driver with a racecar-like center driving position. The enclosed canopy opens upward from the rear to allow for entry and exit. Two rear passenger seats flank the driver's left and right side.

The sleek, low-profile body is designed to convey a high-technology appearance with sculpting that combines angular shapes in the front of the vehicle that taper into geometric, hex forms in the rear. The rear hex forms house cooling radiators for the fuel cell. Formula 1-style barge boards behind the front wheels enhance high speed aerodynamics and convey the vehicle's racing pedigree. The hydrogen storage tanks, visible from the rear deck, showcase the FC Sports fuel cell technology in much the same way that a "naked bike" motorcycle showcases its engineering technology.

The glacier white body color conveys the FC Sport's clean environmental aspirations while the dark wheels and deeply tinted glass provide a symbolic contrast befitting of the vehicle's unique combination of clean power and high performance. Green construction techniques further contribute to a reduced carbon footprint. An organic, bio-structure theme is carried through to the body construction where exterior panels are intended to use plant-derived bio-plastics.

The Advanced Design Studio of Honda R&D Americas in Pasadena, California, developed the FC Sport design study vehicle with the primary objective of using existing fuel cell technology as the basis for an ultimate Honda sports car. Designer Jason Wilbur led the design efforts.

Honda Canada Inc. received top honours from ALG as the winner of the "Mainstream Brand Residual Value Award"
as part of ALG's Canadian Residual Value Awards that honour vehicles that are predicted to retain the highest percentage of their original price after a conventional retail lease.
 
Honda was ranked the best overall brand out of 19 mainstream automotive brands in Canada. Acura, the luxury division of Honda Canada Inc., received a second-place award in the Luxury Brand Residual Value category, placing ahead of 11 other luxury brand competitors.

The awards are based on 2009 model year vehicles. The awards are derived after carefully studying segment competition, historical vehicle performance and industry trends, and are based on analysis using only Canada-specific data. ALG, based in Santa Barbara, California, provides data and consulting services to the automotive industry and publishes the "Automotive Lease Guide" in both Canada and the U.S.
 
In addition to winning the overall Mainstream Brand Residual Value Award, Honda Canada also received individual segment awards for the Honda Odyssey (Minivan segment); the new Honda Fit (Entry Compact Car); and the Honda Ridgeline (Compact/Midsize Pickup Truck).
